Indiana Graduated Driver’s Licensing System

Learner's Permit (Step 1)

  • Minimum issuance age
    • 15 years old with driver education (may begin practice driving only after you begin an approved driver education program)
    • 16 years old without driver education
  • Mandatory learner's permit holding period
    • 180 days
  • Certified driving hours
    • 50 hours of supervised driving practice is required, 10 must be at night completed with:
      • A certified driving instructor
      • A certified driver rehabilitation specialist
      • A licensed driver with valid driving privileges who is at least 25 years old related to the applicant by blood, marriage, or legal status
      • A spouse who is at least 21 years old
  • The completed “Log of Supervised Driving Practice – State Form 54706” must be submitted at the time of application for a driver’s license.

Probationary License (Step 2)

May obtain your probationary license when the following criteria has been met:
  • 16 years and 90 days old with driver education
  • 16 years and 270 days old without driver education
  • Must have held permit for 180 days
  • Must have logged at least 50 hours of supervised driving (10 hours must be at night)

Unrestricted License (Step 3)

At age 21, your license becomes unrestricted and full driving privileges are granted.

Driving Restrictions (What to Know)

  • Cell phones/texting: Prohibits individuals under age 21 from using any type of telecommunication device for any purpose while operating a vehicle, except for making emergency 911 calls
  • Nighttime driving prohibited: Up to age 21 – 10:00 PM - 5:00 AM for the first 180 days of driving
  • If under age 18 and up to age 18 – After first 180 days
    • Sun through Thur 11:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning
    • Sat and Sun mornings 1:00 AM to 5:00 AM
  • Exceptions: Lawful employment, school-sanctioned activity, religious event, or if accompanied by a licensed driver 25 years or older or your spouse with valid driving privileges who is at least 21 years of age
  • Restrictions on passengers
    • Up to age 21, no passenger for the first 180 days unless accompanied by a licensed instructor
    • Licensed driver 25 years or older, or your spouse with valid driving privileges who is at least 21 years of age
  • Exceptions: A sibling, step-sibling, child, step-child or spouse of the driver
  • Violation: Violation of any part of this law is a class C infraction which carries a fine up to $500 plus court cost. All occupants must be properly buckled up.
